so what do you guys think about this one?
I played it today and here are my first jumbled batch of thoughts:
The controls are freakish and nasty… just all over the place and not well thought out at all… not consistent with the game either.
I hate the wierd third person visuals – they drove insane in about 10 minutes of playing. Although it give some interesting angles at some points, it makes it extremely difficult to do simple things such as look round a corner to the right. since your player is on the left hand side of the screen, it blocks almost one whole third of your vision which makes it difficult see things in fornt of you.
The health bar is lodged in your character's back, which is small and hard to notice when you're being attacked. health bar's should be clearly visable in a game like this so you know what you're doing rather than having to specifically look at the health bar. this is a massive distraction in a game where sometimes seconds count.
the so 3d / isometric maps, inventory and tool tip display are a nice use of dynamic effects, but are completely unpractical and once again get right in the way of your visual which forces you to stop. The map specifically annoys me because it's almost like another mission just to get an angle whereby you can see where you are and where you're going to. God knows why they didn't just go with a simpler map, which only shows the floor you're on, rather than a map which blocks your vision of where you are with several layers of maps. it's time consuming and frustrating.
The inventory screen… well, sine there is no visual content to work by you pretty much have to guess what items you have unless you look at your inventory screen, which isn't as bad as the maps and tool tips, but still a little annoying that they couldn't just say what health packs you got on the main screen – maybe somewhere in the corner, like normal games?
Back to controlling our character, god knows why they thought they'd make him walk a little bit more after you let go of the controls – as it turns out, this is another one of those little things that for some reason bug the hell out of me.
The only good thing I can say about this game so far is that the atmosphere of the game really gets to you – the developers obviously did some research (for once) into psychological warfare.

I think that is a good game. The health/stasis?? bars do not clog up the screenn and the health bar is'nt that hard to read and it makes no difference as the only chance you have to replenish health is when enemies aren't around as the inventory happens in real-time. Try it on an easier difficulty as on all difficulties they can rip you apart in one blow or use stasis to slow down the enemies.

I also like it, I am on Chapter 2 currently, having not had chance to put serious time into it. The Obsidian suit is really cool – it's like wearing a PS3!

this game was decent. it really wasnt all it was hyped to be though.. i mean 1. it wasnt scary at all anyone that actually got scared of this game is a freaking wuss…. or 10 years old. 2 it was sooo easy. and short i played through it several times and am now almost complete with impossible and that took me all of …. 2 days.
the lighting is great the sound is “OK” dont let other reviews fool you on this one.. the sound isnt what everyone is saying it is. there are a few graphical errors here and there but i must say my biggest gripe about the game is the fact that sometimes doors take FOREVER TO OPEN. im a very impatient person and i cant stand waiting on laggy ass doors lol.i like the idea of no HUD it kinda gives the game a bit of a movie feel and i cant say i agree with your views on the health bar being on the back.. im playing on a 52 inch plasma so im not having any issues with seeing it at all

I think the doors taking a little while to open is so the level can be loaded behind the door. It doesn't dump anything on your hard drive, so it has to load up somehow.

sorry to cause such an argument here, but I completely disagree with you darkadonis.
Jamesb has it right, the game uses the doors to load. In games like these, which I call, “Trigger Games” meaning something can only happen when something else happens and acts as a trigger for the next 'event'; often make use of things in the game to make it seem more seamless when loading the next part of the game.
As far as the game is concerned, the room you're in is the the ONLY room in the game until you open a door or use a switch to trigger the next event.
In my original post, I must admit I was a little hastey; I didn't like a lot of the things about the game and certainly didn't like the fact that there isn't much of a HUD at all. Especially considering I had just finished playing Bioshock, which has a fantastic HUD.
I was also a bit hastey about the controls. Although I still believe they are all over the place and very messily organised, the controls do work 'well' but only after some time into the game when you've gotten a bit more used to it.
Your comments on it not being scary at all… Well, seems to me like your opressing your fear and telling others that it isn't, to the extent of which you're doing suggests your not quite telling the truth. Despite what you might tell yourself, Humans are naturally scared of, and fear the dark, the unknown, and supernatural (including alien life) instances. It's impossible to deny, so don't try.
I'll gladly say that it IS a scary game where certain parts of it WILL make you jump unless you know (and I mean, KNOW) that it's inevidibly going to happen, which in most cases, even if you've played it a couple times, you forget about it and once again don't expect it to happen, even if you conciously expect something to happen.
The game clearly has a great atmosphere, and unless you've experienced something similar, and in this case I highly doubt you've been in outer space on an alien infested space ship on your own in the dark; It WILL, at some point, even if it's only once, scare you.
In the lighter side of things, I do agree in that since there isn't a HUD, it certainly does feel more like some sort of action movie, which I think makes this game quite unique.
PS: – Nice T.V, I'm hoping it's 1080p, because a lower resolution won't be as nice on a bigger T.V. I, myself have a Samsung S.5 40″ LCD 1080p TV. I also have a 5.1 tallboy surround sound setup. Although I'd like a bigger TV I didn't have the money for, nor the need for a bigger one.

im very much aware that the game uses doors as a load screen of sorts i just find it very annoying. play on impossible with 0 ammo and 0 stasis and youll agree haha.
as for the “fear factor” of this game i honestly did not find it to be scarey at all. in the first mission the run to the elevator where the alien tries to break through the door was intense at best and kinda cool but after that it was a bit of a snorefest. the only time i can recall any game actually making me jump a little was resident evil 2 back in the day inside the interogation room….. was all quiet and calm for about 20 minutes then you walk by that window and BAM licker jumps through the window and it was loud as hell…. now THAT is a classic “i just pissed myself” moment. ok so maybe my wuss comment was a bit out of line and i suppose some people might find this game to be scarey and if your one of them then great i envy you and wish i could have had this type of experience with it.
the controls could use a small bit of work but overall i think they are pretty damn good. my only complaint about the controls is that it feels a little sluggish at times and being able to pull a 180 turn would be really helpfull. combat wise melee could use a little tweeking and feel free to disagree with this one but i think the game would be a lot cooler if it were possible to use the plasma blade from the movie
and yes i am running 1080p and i can say this game is beautiful. with the exception of a few moments where the textures blur really bad but this only happens like twice and dosnt last too long. right in the beginning when the crew is making their way to the ship all i could say …..wow….. while trying not to drool haha

Yeah I don't think a game has ever made me jump before but this one has made me a jump maybe three or four times now.
I certainly agree with you on the whole sluggish thing as well. the controls need a little bit more work, and yeah im playing impossible mode and know what it's like to have 0 ammo and 0 stasis, with depleting oxygen and no oxygen packs left! lol. my solution? run past everything and hope for the best haha.
another thing about his movements actually would be why the hell doesn't he run properly!? think about it, he's in this massive alien infested ship and he has a F**K load of aliens running/crawling/jumping after him and he can't even gather the strength to run fast very fast. :S
If it were me, I would run as fast as i could! But Isaac seems to just… 'jog' away.
Graphically speaking, this game as you've just said is beautiful – despite the bluring when it loads up scenes and stuff, you don't notice it very much and since everything it so seamless, it really is like watching a movie sequence.

my best guess as to why he runs so slow is that they wanted to make the game seem realistic and if i were wearing that heavy ass suit and carrying those big ass powertools i dont think i would move very fast either haha
im about to finish impossible now and even though this game is great on so many lvl's im actually starting to not care so much about this platinum trophy even though im 2 missions away from getting it haha its really a shame i couldnt have started the game on impossible that would have been much more fun.

strange actualy; I'm on chapter 7 of impossible mode and starting to feel the same way. the only thing driving me through impossible mode is the fact that i want the platinum… but it's getting a little annoying because at the moment id rather be playing another game. at the moment I'd like to play LBP, which i got a few days ago, but haven't played yet because I like to finish one game before starting another.
I just need to get it done and over with really.

This may sound sad after reading all the previous posts, but I enjoyed this game alot. I have the platinum for this game, and I still want to play it. I guess I love stomping arms, legs, and heads off of corpses, haha. The music in the game is the greatest part. It is so eerie. I cannot wait to get my repaired PS3 back so that I can play this game some more
