So my laptop is about to die, and my ps3 is running out of room, and I want to get an external HD to backup the data on both, so I can transfer my files to whatever device I please.  I don't need something enormous, like 400-500 GB would do the trick, but a lot of them appear to require software.  Does anyone know if that would conflict with the PS3 since I can't install the software, or does anyone know of a good external thats readily compatible with the PS3?  Any input on this is appreciated.

yeah… I'm pretty set on an external.  I've got too much data for a memory stick transfer, and I plan on getting another computer in a year or two, plus I would like to transfer stuff between my work computers and home.  If I could just hook a transfer cable up to my PS3 it wouldn't be as much of a problem, but I also don't have the tools to open it up, nor do I trust myself to do it.

I got a 250GB External HHD, and to make it compatible with the PS3 (because most external HHD's are the wrong format for the PS3 to recognise) I downloaded a free program to install on my PC called swiffknife which will convert the external HHD to FAT32 because windows can't format anything to FAT32 more than 32GB. However the swiffknife program will let you do any size.

NOTE:

You can not put save game data onto it. Nor can you put games onto it.

so,,, let me get this straight…

It has to be formatted in FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it, and as a result I can transfer up to 32 GB at a time?  And as long as its formatted as such, theres no other reason the ps3 shouldn't recognize it?  If thats the case, then I'm good and thanks guys.

Yeah that is right, however if you download the swiffknife programe then you can reformat it to FAT32 at any size. I'll get the linkage for you to look it up in a bit. I am about to go out, so I'll do it when I get back in a few hours.

for the price of a 500gb external, you might as well put in a little bit extra and get a 1tb external.  seriously, the difference in price isn't that much.

the ps3 can still read from the external hard drive and I have yet to see one that needs additional software.  external drives are usually plug and play – similar to a usb pen.

rather than transferring your files onto the ps3, just keep your files on the hard drive.

Most external HHD's these days are sold as a NTFS format, and the PS3 can't read that. If you can find one that is sold as a FAT32 format, well done you.
