Finally, after a few wonderful years of daily gaming, my PS3 has finally died. I was casually waiting for a couple of friends to play after the update today, and then it powered off. I was on Skype with my friends at the time (we use it as 'party chat', which is pretty good, actually) and it just went. I was waiting for it to happen, really. I have a 40gig model with a 120gig hard drive.
So, should I look for ways to fix it, or get a slim? Also, what should I do with my hard drive? It's not backed up or anything. Am I going to lose my saves or can I just stick my hard drive into my new Playstation?
Cheers guys.

Wait for the price to go down at Gamescon, buy a new 320GB slim, use the data transfer feature to copy all your stuff… Sorted
You could get it fixed but it's pretty old… IMO your better with a new one, just wait for the reduction… I've heard Gamescon will be when Sony take the price down…
RRP £199.99 apparently, possible £179.99 Wait and see Unless you work in $$, then i'm unsure…

Fix it, back up the saves and trade it in. The HDD won't be compatible with any other console without formatting so whatever's on there is useless on anything but your dead console.

I don't think I'm going to bother fixing it. Waste of time and effort, if you ask me. I might have to go out and get a slim tomorrow, or at the weekend. Regarding my HDD, is there no other way that I can recover my saves apart from fixing the Playstation and backing them up?

I'm afraid not man. Each HDD is formatted to the PS3 it was last played in. As soon as you put it into another you'll be asked to format. Even putting it into a laptop or PC doesn't work. The only way to get your saves back is the fix. It's a complete pain!

Looks like I'll have to start again then. At least I wasn't halfway through any games, I guess. Still, some annoying stuff if gone, like my LBP costumes and my Gran Turismo saves. And, Killzone 3 is stuck in there!
UGH! Such a pain. I wish I was still under warranty.

Well if you're not going to trade it in or fix it then getting KZ3 back should be fairly straight forward

Sorry Doc, didn't mean to ignore you. I haven't bought a slim yet, I have sent my old girl in for repair to a shop near me. Hopefully it's all going to be fine and I can play on it for a while longer.
I might still get a slim just in case. I'm not sure how long it will last after the repair.

I definitely wouldn't use it again after repair, it's inevitable that it'll break again pretty soon after, just like mine did. If I was you I'd get it repaired, get the game back, backup the saves, then take the repairers company sign off the side of the system, and then trade it in to get some money to put towards a slim. I got £150 for my original 60gb model.

From what I have learnt from technology is never repair something,
Just buy a new one!
