No. As soon as you put your old HDD into the new PS3 it’ll tell you it needs to be formatted.

not sure im sure the ps3 auto formats a HDD when it detects a different one has been placed in it. so even though you change the hdd it will still wipe out the memory, however next time you might want to think anbout backing up ur ps3s data to a external hdd every month or so,just to be safe

cheers.

another question.

will all my online rankings and stats carry over if i go on a game on my new ps3? if so, this will save me getting my current ps3 fixed just to transfer some data onto a new ps3.

It depends on the game. Some games save your online stats on the HDD while others save them to servers. Which ones are you trying to carry over?

Formatting will completely wipe your HDD.

Probably all online multiplayer games store the stats online locked to your PSN ID, so stats will stay the same on your new PS3.

I just juggled U2 and MW2 between consoles and the stats transferred so they're saved online. Chances are COD4 and WAW do the same but you should be able to find out in the IW forums. Not all online games do it though, I know Red Faction doesn't and Warhawk saved your stats but not the character detail (skin, insignia, colour etc.) that you had picked. While you can't check anything on a broken PS3 if you were ever able to check your stats in any game while you weren't signed in then chances are they're on the HDD.
