Hi all. I was just trying to back up my ps3 using a external usb drive and for some reason it is not showing up as a destination to back up to. Is there something I have to do to get it to recognize the drive? I even went to format utility to see if if shows up there, but it doesnt even show up there. All that was showing up was the sd card I had in as a destination. I removed that to see if the usb drive would show up without it in and still no =\. I cant imagine they would make it so you couldnt backup to an external drive seeing as how somebackups can be way bigger than an sd card or thumb drive could hold. Any info or help with this would be greatly appreciated =)

ps: I know the drive works as I had it plugged in to my computer right before to transfer some stuff off of it to make room.

Thank you in advance.

You'll need to have it formatted as FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize it.

Are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista? They each have slightly varying processes. If you are trying to convert from NTFS to FAT32 – without the use of 3rd party programs – I don't think it can be done unless you reformat the hard drive and then partition it. This will erase all data so be sure to back up anything valuable beforehand. Also keep in mind FAT32 has size limitations. Each FAT32 partition can only be a max of 32GB, and you cannot store any file larger than 4GB.

_________________________________________________________

If once you have formatted the drive to FAT32 (or FAT16) you would like to format it back to NTFS for more secure use on your PC this is what you would do via Windows XP:

1. Open a command prompt.

Here are 2 ways to do this:

- Start > Run > type in “cmd”

- Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt

2. In the command prompt type the following (drive letter is the drive that you want to convert):

convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs

for example: convert g: /fs:ntfs

3. You will then receive a message like this:

” The type of file system is FAT.

Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter  “

You then need to type in the volume label for the drive and press Enter.

4. Once the conversion is complete you will receive a message saying:

“Conversion Complete”

At that point you know you have successfully converted your drive from FAT32/FAT16 to NTFS and can now close the command prompt.

Hmm I thought it was going to be easier than it is lol. I received my hd enclosure today and I was unable to format my hd into fat32 using windows, but windows can only format it into ntfs cause its a 60 hd. I looked around online and found a couple programs to do it but they all cost between 35-80 dollars ^^. thats rediculous. ALl the free versions of the programs i tried dont have the option that i need, available on the trial version….figures =\. So any of you know how to get my hd frmatted into fat32 using windows or a free program that will let me do it?

Thank yoiu very much.Smile

Correct me if i'm wrong but can't you just go to My Computer, right click on the drive you would like to format, and choose format?  I've done this for flash memory sticks etc to change from FAT to FAT32.

I can't guarantee this program will get the job done as I have never used it personally… but it's free and from what I've seen it looks promising.

It's called SwissKnife. It's claimed that this program is designed to allow quick and easy partitioning of drives to FAT16/FAT32/and NTFS or any combination of the 3.

I'm not sure if link posting for this material is allowed but I will try it out anyway. Sorry in advance if I am breaking any forum rules. Here's a link to the freeware:

I'm not sure about this but from what i have read, you can use the partitioning program Swiss Knife to make huge FAT32 partition in your hard disk unlike other FAT32 partitioning programs that give you smaller capacity to partition..again i'm not sure about this okay Laughing
