There is so much information to give here, it will take a good amount of posts to get you making websites… first off, you need some background knowlege and I'll get you starting out on web PAGES, not sites.

_____________________

there are several ways to make a website.  if you're a beginner, there are two ways you can get started.

1) start learning HTML (as it is the basis of most normal sites – this is called a 'standard').

or 2) create web pages using WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy-wig, meaning What You See Is What You Get), which is where you have a web page builder, and you create the page by adding pictures, tables and text as if you were doing so normally.  the builder then does all the html for you.

To learn HTML, there are two approaches.  1) learn as you do. This is where you slowly learn it by creating pages upon pages and when you look at the code of the page, you find patterns which relate to what you've put on the page.

2) study.  This is possibly the quickest way, but by studying alone, you don't get the experience of creating the pages.  However, you will get a good in depth knowledge of the code.

As far as web page builders are concerned, there are two types. online and offline.  HTML building using WYSIWYG is a good way to get started, and to slowly build knowlege.   it's far better to have an offline HTML builder because it's a safer approach to building if you have a 'loose' internet connection – if you do it online and your connection turns on and off ie wireless does all the time, then there is a chance you will lose your data if you don't save and your connection cuts.

A good offline HTML builder is called Front Page Express.  Originally designed for Windows 98 (I think), and has always been my preferred choice to simple HTML building.  It's a little hard to get the program online now due to it's age, but if you need it, I can arrange a download since I still have it.  of course, it's completely free.  You can download it online here

Now that you have the program install it and open it up.  Now simply treat it as you would with an office word page.  Think about something you'd like to write about and get it down on that page. it doesn't matter at the moment because this will simply be to get you an example that you've done yourself.

See if you can figure out how to: Format the background, text, hyperlinks, tables, and images.

When you're happy you've got a nice variety of stuff on your page, save it!  it will prompt you how to save it, just click As File.

if you use any images, remember to create a copy of that image in the same folder as your newly save web page.

Info:  Web pages will be saved as either .HTML or .HTM

_________________________

From this point, you're probably thinking, “How the hell do I get my page online then?”  Well, all you need is something called a web host.  But I'll tell you all about Web Hosts when you've done this first step of creating a webpage.

good luck and if you have any questions, just reply.

Remember, there is a long way to go yet from websites, and then websties that look like this one, and my uncharted one.

Just keep at it, and we'll get there sooner than you think.

yeah unzip it and install it… it may even appear as a stand alone .exe application. in which case make a folder to contain the program with all the files you just unzipped and get started.

once you've done a simple web page, post back and we can talk about web hosts, and file hosts.

Now you need to find a Web Host. Thse are just websites that get your pages online.

You can go to

godaddy.com or anything else that will give you a .com, .org, .net domain name, and hosting.

If you don't have the money to pay for a  .com,.org,.net etc,

There's always free hosting out there. You could go to a website like heliohost.org

and they give you a free website like example.heliohost.org

yes. the next step is webhosting.

I recommend a site called 110mb.com it has an excellent range of services for a cheap price.  you can opt for a free account, which gives you more services than some paying webhosts.  110mb.com is also up-to-date with the latest scripts needed for websites to function correctly.  (that's a bit more advanced, but it gives you and idea of how good this web host is).  the ONLY downside is that it is NOT a FILE host, and the maximum upload is around 8 -10 mb, but for a web host, it's awesome).

Anyway, can you tell me how you've built the website?  I take it, since you're just beginning, they are .htm or .html files.  in that case, you need to organise all the files and folders of your website into a single zip file (this will help to get actually get your site from your PC to the webhost).  use that .zip file of your website and once you've got a webhost, upload the .zip file and unpack it so that the files and folders are then uploaded onto your web host.  your site is now ONLINE.

if you have any problems with this step, just post, and I'll reply to anything you need. good luck, and remember that if this is the first time you're doing this, you will more than likely have a problem or two.
