About your 'overheating'.. Have you got your PS3 in a TV cabinet or something? Whilst folding (or playing graphics intensive games for that matter) the PS3's fan will spin up pretty fast if it's in a small space where there is no good airflow around the system. Check the picture out here in my Folding Setup – smASHer88_PS3 blog post. See how i've got my PS3 sitting on top of the cabinet. I was orginally going to put it in that space next to the Wii (where you put things like VCRs etc), but i noticed within about 15min of folding, the fan would start cranking to a level that wasn't overly loud.. but just annoying enough to move it. Now it only gets to that unbearable level when my living room is above 30 degrees C.
That model above is the original 40GB PAL model (CECHG02). Funnily enough my newer (Dad's) PS3 40GB PAL (CECHJ02) that was free with a Sony Bravia HDTV runs in a smaller TV cabinet in a more confined space fine (although i did take the glass doors off this little unit for air ventilation) and have a photo – Folding Setup – Lahm_Family_PS3. It seems to run fine.. The fan never needs to crank up. I thinks its due to the later 40GBs having an upgraded heatsink/cooling system inside.. which would be right, because i measured the newer one being 300g lighter.. Anyway lol
What model do you have? 60GB? They are the hottest running systems.. using over 200w whilst folding.. where as both of my 40GBs are 125-135w. Don't use any 3rd party crappy peripheral fans etc.. they're not any good.. just it needs good ventilation. If it still is overheating constantly, then i'd get it checked out by Sony.
