Being a collector is good and all, but I thoroughly believe in playing games that I simply enjoy. I don't get games just for the trophies. it's lame. If I find people who start bragging about trophies, I generally stop talking to them because it's lame.
I stopped getting trophies a LONG time ago now, but as it stands, I have about 10 games (retail – excluding psn) and 7 platinums. Although I really enjoy getting 100% on the games I like, I MUST admit, there are some trophies that are simply not worth the time and effort.
Since the last retail game I bought, I haven't found a single ps3 game worth buying. I'm generally waiting for Bioshock 2 now.
But, in saying all this, I think you may have missed a large flaw in your definition between the two. The reason you're doing this is because you feel the need to clarify the difference (quite rightly too!) But essentially, both titles share a large and very common trait – both groups are obsessed with obtaining them, which inevitably ends up clouding their judgement slightly. It's unhealthy competition in my books.
In my opinion, I believe that trophy 'collectors' or 'whores' should take trophies and its equal conterpart (the leveling system), only lightly. If things are taken too harshly, then people start throwing words around.
