I'd be happy to teach you both. im sure the admin would also give some advice for you.  by the looks of things, our admin like dynamic effects, which is something I don't bother with much myself. 

You see each site designer looks for different things. one person might like standard sites, while another might love flash based sites. and each differnt type of website requires different types of code to do so.

In my opinion, however, the basics are better. I like PHP, CSS, HTML being my favourite because it's so easy, and javascript being my least favourite because it's much harder to understand.
